Be active. Stay active.
Exercise preventative medicine.
Exercise is one the cornerstones in your plan to stay active, healthy and engaged. You've made the commitment to get up and get moving. Make an equal commitment to do it responsibly.
- Prepare
Before you begin a fitness program, make sure you have the proper equipment and clothing for your activity of choice. Before any exercise, drink plenty of water and continue to do so throughout the course of your activity as well as the rest of the day. - Stretch
A long muscle is a happy muscle. Remaining flexible is the key to remaining injury-free. Ideally, you should warm up the muscle through a few minutes of low-intensity activity, stretch gently and then increase the intensity of your chosen activity. After cooling down, stretch again. - Warm Up / Cool Down
Use the first 3 to 5 minutes of your activity to warm up gradually and then increase the intensity of your activity. At the end of your activity, cool down by decreasing the level of intensity. - Pace Yourself
Start at an easy pace and gradually increase your time, distance and intensity. This applies for a single event like a day's run, and it is also a philosophy for maintaining an active lifestyle. Staying fit and healthy is a marathon, not a sprint. - Listen to Your Body
That means more than your breathing. Listen to your body tell you about your level of exertion and fatigue. When you overexert or overextend, your risk of injury increases.
